Companion apps

Companion apps are programs that should be running before the simulator starts. Register them once under Settings and X-Dispatch starts them, then X-Plane, every time you launch.

Add a companion app

WhereSettings > Companion Apps.

  1. 01

Press Add companion app, or press Add on a suggested entry.

  2. 02

Choose the executable, add any arguments it needs, and set a working directory if the program expects to be started from its own folder.

  3. 03

Switch on Auto-launch with X-Plane so it starts when you press Launch. Set a delay in seconds if the tool needs a head start before X-Plane opens. X-Dispatch starts the companion app, waits, then launches X-Plane.

  • Companion apps are launched detached, so they keep running on their own after X-Dispatch closes.
  • Batch files (.bat, .cmd) cannot be launched directly. Point the executable at the program itself, for example javaw.exe, put the rest in Arguments, and set the working directory to the app's folder.
  • This works for any helper that needs to be up before the simulator: ATC clients, hardware drivers, weather tools, not only XPME.

X-Plane Map Enhancement

X-Plane Map Enhancement (XPME) adds satellite imagery to X-Plane scenery through a FUSE drive. It must be running before X-Plane loads scenery. Add it from the suggested entry on Windows, and use the --start-service flag when you want it to start its Ortho service with the app.

Administrator rights

X-Dispatch checks access and elevation before launching a companion app and warns you when Windows administrator rights are involved. A tool that needs to run as administrator cannot be started by an app that does not, so either run X-Dispatch as administrator or start that tool yourself.
